Create Ambient Occlusion:

In order to bake an Occlusion map, the body mesh needs to be isolated from the rest of the objects (eyes, teeth, hair, etc.).

  1. Either copy the body mesh to a new layer, or select the body mesh in the current one.
  2. Press the 'Tab' key to enter Edit mode.
  3. Press 'A' to deselect everything.
  4. Place the mouse cursor on the body mesh and press 'L' to select only that mesh.
  5. Press 'Ctrl-I' to inverse select, thus selecting all the eyes and other objects.
  6. Delete them.
  7. Once deleted, go back to Object mode pressing 'Tab' and delete the hair mesh as well.
  8. Select once again the body mesh and, under the 'Materials' tab, click the '-' button to remove all the materials on the mesh.
  9. Create a new material for the mesh.
  10. Place a plane mesh under the model, in order for the light path to not reach from there on the Occlusion.
  11. Make sure that under the 'World' tab, Ambient Occlusion is activated.
  12. On the UV/Image Editor window, create a new Image. Use a size of 2048 x 2048 and a White color.
  13. Under the 'Image' menu, use 'Save as Image' to save it to a file.
  14. On the Node window, make sure to add this image as the texture for the material that was added previously.
  15. While selecting the model, go to the Render tab and under the 'Bake' menu, select it as shown.
  16. Finally, press 'Bake'. The resulting image can be found on the UV/Image Editor window in order to be saved.

Extract maps from existing character:
  1. Save .blend in a folder you know (and don't save from now on)
  2. Drag a new window and set it to UV/Image Editor
  3. Select map
  4. Click "Unpack" icon and choose "Write file to current directory (overwrite existing file)". This will create folder "texture" with that map.
  5. Repeat step 4 for all maps
  6. Don't save your blend file! You just unpacked the maps, which you might not be want. Close Blender and reload .blend before continuing.
